Professional Level Workshop The Professional Level Workshop of JOKWW has been featured in such publications as Shooting Star Review and African Voices. It has also presented craft workshops and readings at the 1991 Pittsburgh Black Writers Conference and the 2002 National Black Arts Festival. Admittance to the workshop is a two-tiered process. An applicant need not be published to gain admittance to the workshop, but he or she must have mastered the building blocks of fiction. No monetary dues are required, as a member's critique is considered his or her dues; strict attendance regulations are therefore imposed. Aspiring applicants are required to submit four (4) copies of one short story or novel excerpt of up to fifteen (15) double-spaced typed pages to the Screening Committee. The name of the applicant must not appear anywhere on the manuscript, only the title of the work. All submissions must be accompanied by an application form. Should the applicant's submission successfully pass the committee, the applicant will then be invited to read a second selection of his or her work to the workshop membership. A majority of the votes cast during this meeting will admit the applicant to the workshop on a four (4) month probationary basis. A 2/3 majority vote at the end of the probationary period is required for permanent membership.
Interested in visiting the workshop? Visitors are allowed to attend a total of three (3) workshops, unless otherwise invited by the Executive Director. Visitors may only critique during workshop if permitted by the reader. Visitors are not allowed to read their own work under any circumstances. The Professional Level Workshop meets from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm every other Saturday in the main building at Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Plaza, 1368 Fulton Street (between Brooklyn and New York Avenues) in Brooklyn, New York. Please see the security guard for directions to the room. Don't forget to check out our calendar for the next scheduled meeting! JOKWW Inc. is an Organization in Residence at Restoration's Center for Arts and Culture.
